In short
The website has no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies. The app keeps its settings on your Mac and connects to our server only when you use Ask or send us a report. The only personal data we receive is what you choose to send: a request to Ask, a report, an email, or a waitlist registration.
Who is responsible
This policy covers the DuoNavigator website and the DuoNavigator app for macOS, both provided by Dror Lederman (“we”). You can reach us at dror.lederman@gmail.com.
This website
The website has no analytics, advertising, tracking cookies or accounts, and it loads no scripts, fonts or images from other services. Its only form is the Windows and Linux waitlist, described below. If you choose a light or dark color theme, the choice is saved in your browser’s local storage (as mc-theme) so the site can remember it. It stays on your device and is never sent to us. You can remove it by clearing this site’s data in your browser.
Hosting and downloads
The website is served by Firebase Hosting, and the app is downloaded from Cloud Storage for Firebase. Both are Google services. When you open a page or download a file, your browser sends Google the technical information any website needs in order to respond, such as your IP address, the address requested, the time and your browser’s user agent. Google processes this information as our service provider and may keep it in its own logs for security and to run its services. See the Firebase privacy information at https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy and Google’s Privacy Policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy. We have not turned on request logging for the website or the downloads, so we do not receive these details. The Firebase console shows us only overall usage, such as the amount of traffic. The files are stored in the United States, and Google may process data in other countries too. Ask, bug reports and waitlist registrations go to our server, which runs on Google Cloud (Cloud Functions for Firebase) in the United States; our database is on Google Cloud too. Google may keep standard request logs for the server, such as the IP address and time of a request, under its own terms.
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and anything you attach. We use them only to answer you and to fix problems you report. Our email is handled by Gmail, a Google service. We keep correspondence as long as it helps us support you, and we delete it when you ask.
Windows and Linux waitlist
If you register on the waitlist page, the website sends our server your email address, the platforms you chose (Windows, Linux or both) and any optional answers you give: your current desktop system, Linux distribution, what you mainly need, what you would use it for and whether you’d like to test a beta. It also sends the page language, which of our links led you to the form, and the version of the notice shown next to it. We store this in our database on Google Cloud (Firebase), with the time you registered, and use your email address only to send you updates about the platforms you chose. We don’t store your IP address, browser details or the page you came from; a one-way hash of your IP address is kept for two days to limit how many registrations can be made per day. We don’t yet ask you to confirm your address. We keep your registration until we delete it or you ask us to; to have it removed, write to dror.lederman@gmail.com.
The app
DuoNavigator has no accounts and contains no analytics, telemetry, advertising or crash reporting of its own. It connects to the internet only for the two features below, only to our own server, and never sends the contents of your files, except images you add to a report yourself.
Ask
Ask (⌘K) is off until you turn it on. When you send a request, the app sends our server the request text, the paths of the two folders shown (they can include your macOS account name; from version 1.2.1 your home folder is sent as ~), up to 200 names in the current folder, the names of the items selected in each pane (up to 200 per pane), your previous request and Ask’s question when you are answering one, the app version, your language and a random install ID. Our server, which runs on Google Cloud (Firebase), passes the request, paths and names to Claude, a service of Anthropic, to understand it, and returns a plan that the app shows you before anything runs. We do not store the request, paths or names. We keep only monthly and daily totals of requests and cost, and, for the daily limits, per-day counts keyed by a one-way hash of the install ID and of your IP address, which are deleted after about two days. Anthropic processes it as our service provider under its commercial terms for its API.
Bug reports and feature requests
When you use Help › Report a Bug… or Request a Feature…, the app sends what you typed (a title, a description and, if you add one, your email address), up to three images you add (such as screenshots, made smaller and without the original file’s metadata), the app and macOS versions, your Mac’s processor type, your language and a random install ID, which our server stores only as a one-way hash. We store reports in our database on Google Cloud (Firebase) and use them only to fix problems and plan the app, and your email address only to answer you. A hash of your IP address is kept for two days to limit how many reports can be sent per day. Check that images don’t show anything private before you send them. We keep a report until we have dealt with it: when we mark it as handled, we delete your email address and the images and keep only the text and versions; we delete a whole report when it is no longer needed or when you ask.
What the app stores on your Mac
To remember your setup, the app saves its settings in the macOS preferences of your user account (drorlederman.duonavigator): the window and pane layout, the folders and tabs that were open, sort orders, Favorites, recent locations, display options, the path of an external editor if you chose one, and a record of folders you gave it access to. This information stays on your Mac and in your own backups. To remove it, quit the app and run defaults delete drorlederman.duonavigator in Terminal.
macOS and other apps
Some actions are carried out by macOS or by other apps, under their own privacy terms: Quick Look previews, opening a file in another app, and the checks macOS runs on downloaded apps when you first open them. If you chose to share Mac analytics with Apple in System Settings, macOS may send Apple reports that include DuoNavigator crashes.
Children
The website and the app are not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, data protection law (for example, Israel’s Privacy Protection Law or the EU General Data Protection Regulation) may give you the right to access, correct or delete personal data about you, and to complain to a data protection authority. The personal data we hold is email correspondence, the bug reports and feature requests you send from the app, and waitlist registrations. To make a request, write to dror.lederman@gmail.com. For data in Google’s logs, see Google’s Privacy Policy.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and the date at the top. If a future version of the app sends any data, this policy will be updated before that version is released.
